About the Symposium
The Reimagining the Classroom Symposium has been evolving from the first Flexible Learning Summit in 2013 to the first virtual Breaking New Ground webinar in 2021, but our mission remains the same: to support the Strategic 150 goal of promoting transformative learning experiences for our students by exploring the complex relationships between physical classrooms, teaching pedagogies, and emerging technologies.

Our Campus
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was established in 1862 as one of 37 land-grant institutions established under the Morrill Act and has grown to become an educational beacon for faculty and students around the world. With over 50,000 students enrolled in 15 colleges and instructional units, the campus includes 651 buildings spread across almost 7,000 acres. The University of Illinois is home to a stand-out list of notable faculty, staff, and alumni including athletes, musicians, actors, artists, and inventors of national and international acclaim. Recent efforts in campus modernization continue to make this flagship campus a leading institution and world leader.

Our Classrooms
A quick glance at newer campus resources like the Classroom Instructional Facility website, the Classroom Standards manual, the IFLEX website, and plans for the new SCCIL building shows how far our campus has come in designing and building active learning classrooms and study spaces. We firmly believe that the design of a classroom impacts the teaching and learning that happens there, and are proud of the many flexible learning environments that support collaborative learning, technology integration, and student-centered teaching strategies.
It’s time to celebrate our progress and look optimistically toward the future as we try to discern the evolving needs of faculty, students, and staff. Plans that are on the drawing table today will become the classrooms of tomorrow. Let's work together to build teaching and learning spaces that our faculty and students need to succeed.
